CABO HOT TIPS

Cabo San Lucas has plenty of things to see and do! As a matter of fact, there is so much to do in Cabo that it is easy to get side-tracked and miss some of Cabo's best sights.

This section of Cabo Expo has been designed to inform you of some of Cabo's Hot Tips so you can review some of Cabo's favorite options before you arrive in Paradise!

EL ARCO * THE OFFICE * FISHING DOCKS

SQUID ROE * PEDREGAL

TRAILER PARK * CHILENO BAY * SIDE TRIPS

  • EL ARCO

El Arco is one of Cabo's best known landmarks, and it's a very fun excursion. Yet most visitors to Cabo San Lucas never actually visit this special Cabo location. Many Baja visitors notice the large granite arch located just offshore from Cabo's main beaches, and the famous Arch logo is a common logo on the Taxis around town. Some people even realize that the Arch and these beautiful granite rock formations mark the final tip of the thousand-mile long Baja Peninsula. But only a handful of visitors actually go out to check it out in person. It's worth the trip!

There are several ways to get a close up look at the Arch. The most common way is to catch a panga (boat) from the beach or from the marina, and take a one hour round trip tour. The cost is inexpensive, and this is a great way to see the Arch up close, with the added value of seeing Lover's Beach, Seal Rock and other awesome rock formations along the way.

For those who want to see a bit more on the way out to the Arch, taking a glass bottom boat adds a whole new dimension to the round trip. The waters out to the tip are calm and clear, and many fish and birds can be enjoyed as part of the excursion.

Looking for a little adventure? Probably the most exciting way to experience the Arch is to swim under it with a mask and snorkel! Except for an occasional low tide which can make walking under the Arch another fun option, snorkeling to the Arch from Lover's Beach is a great experience for those who are in good shape.

No matter which of the above methods you use to visit the Arch, bring a camera. There are some great photo opportunities along the way, and when you get home you'll be glad you captured the Arch on film!

  • THE OFFICE

Cabo offers more than it's share of lazy activities, and spending a few hours at 'The Office' has become a habit for more than a few Cabo aficionados. This restaurant is located right on the beach and is a great place to do nothing and have a great time doing it!

The Office is located on El Medano Beach, between the Hacienda Hotel on the west end and the Melia San Lucas Hotel on the east end. The tables and chairs are located right in the sand, and the Sea of Cortez is just a lime-throw away.

Music rocks all day here, the crowd is lively and fun, and the availability of food and drink may lend you to ask the question: Why not just spend all day here? If you did, you would have plenty of company!

Everything you need is right here. Want to take a panga out to the Arch? This is the place. Want to go para-sailing? Right here. Jump in the ocean to cool off? It's 20 steps from your table. Shop for trinkets and trash? The vendors are happy to show you their wares.

Seeing a good thing, some of Cabo's more creative locals have given The Office some well deserved competition. So now you can be completely non-productive at The Office, Billygan's Island, or MANGO DECK. Or, if you have the energy, you can graze from one to the other. Either way, it's a complete waste of time. And that's a good thing!

  • FISHING DOCKS

Cabo has been famous for fishing for over half a century, and thanks to the popularity of 'Catch and Release' the odds are good that fishing will continue to be a mainstay in Cabo for years to come.

In the old days, most of Cabo's visitors came down to fish. Today, although some visitors come to fish, the majority choose to stay poolside, snorkel, shop and party. But even if you are not in town to fish, checking out the action is a great experience.

If you are an early bird, head on down to the west end of the marina (behind the Plaza Las Glorias Hotel) about 6:00 in the morning. The boats and crew are getting ready, the fishermen are preparing for a half day at sea, and the energy level is very exciting! One by one the boats head out to sea to try their luck.

If you ran it long and hard the night before, and there is just no way no are going to get out of bed to watch a bunch of fishermen get ready, you have another option. Most of these boats start heading back to the marina after 12:30 or 1:00 in the afternoon, and other boats trickle in even after 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Assuming you are out of bed by then, heading down to watch the unloading of the day's catch is an interesting experience.

For the truly lazy tourist who just wants to sit on the beach and watch the boats enter the harbor, you too can enjoy the success of the day. Most fishing boats fly flags as they enter the harbor, showing the amount and type of fish they have landed. So as you glance up from your cold cervesa, take a gander for these flags to get a general idea of the days catch.

  • EL SQUID ROE

Cabo San Lucas is famous for it's nightlife. There is no other way to say it...Cabo rocks! The 10 blocks of bars and clubs that start near the end of Baja Highway by the marina climax at one of Cabo's most famous watering holes...El Squid Roe.

Squid Roe is the Mamma of the Cabo nightlife, and for plenty of good reasons. This two story establishment was designed solely for one purpose...to have fun! And if you can't have fun here, you might as well grab your pocket protector and go home.

Squid Roe is open day and night, and if music, dancing and people watching aren't your thing you might want to drop by in the afternoon just to grab a fun lunch and check out the venue. It's an entertaining place to enjoy a bite to eat, but keep in mind that this place looks a lot different at night with hundreds of guys and gals primed for a good time.

Things get started a little late at the Squid each night. Yes, people show up and start partying as early as 9:00 or 10:00 each night, but the energy really starts to fire up from midnight on. Great music, wild dancing, and plenty of crazy people doing crazy things never seems to end. If you want to dance in a tree or in a cage this is the place to do it!

To catch the real action at squid Roe head through the main indoor area and towards the outdoor areas at the rear of the property. If this area gets too crowded or wild, just head upstairs to the second level. There is always a little more elbow room upstairs and the view of the madness down below is great! If you are only going to hit one bar in Cabo, this is the one! Bring bail money.

  • PEDRIGAL

Pedrigal is the section of large homes you see up in the hills behind downtown Cabo San Lucas. There are two cool things to see once you get into Pedrigal, awesome houses and even more awesome empty beaches!

The main entrance to Pedrigal is right off of Marina Boulevard, just past the Plaza Las Glorias Hotel at the 'Pedrigal" sign on the west side of the street. Turn right and head up just past the small commercial plaza. At the official entrance to Pedrigal you will be greeted by a small guard gate which is usually manned. Since beaches in Mexico are open to the public, your best bet to get past the guard is to tell him that you are going to the 'playa'. If all else fails give him a beer.

To get to the beaches follow the circulation signs up the hill on the right. Although there are indeed some nice homes on the 'city' side of Pedrigal, the homes on the 'ocean' side will literally blow you away. These mega-mansions are h-u-g-e, and offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean! If you have purchased a burger at Carl's Junior you have helped finance one of the nicer homes here!

If finding a large quiet beach is your goal, head towards the north end of Pedrigal, down by the palm grove, and park. The path through the sand area leads you to the beach. Welcome to Paradise!

Think this beach is beautiful? Wait until you head a bit further north, past the granite boulders that seem to mark the end of the beach at water's edge. Once through these rocks the beach opens up again to an even more remote beach, and just as beautiful. And if you want to explore a really private beach keep heading north to the next set of boulders. An even more awesome beach awaits you there, plus some of Cabo's best sunsets!!

  • THE TRAILER PARK RESTAURANT

No doubt about it, Cabo has some great restaurants. Almost every kind of food you desire can be found either in downtown Cabo or along the Los Cabos Corridor. But one of Cabo's best restaurants dates back to a time when less than 1,000 people called this corner of paradise Home. The Trailer Park, officially named "El Faro Viejo" is a Cabo secret that continues to please visitors year after year.

Now for the bad news. Many of the people looking to experience this unique restaurant end up eating at the wrong place! The main reason? The name 'Trailer Park' is just a nick name for El Faro Viejo Restaurant, which is actually located in a trailer park at the north of town. The problem? There is another restaurant with the real name 'Trailer Park' located just east of town. It advertises itself as...well...the Trailer Park Restaurant. So you can see how it would be easy to pull up a plate at the wrong place if you didn't know where you were going.

So when you jump in a cab, make sure the driver takes you to the original old Trailer Park restaurant north of town in the back streets of Cabo, not the one west of town, just off of the main highway (although they also have good food)!

The Trailer Park restaurant evolved as a convenient place to eat for one of Cabo's first small RV parks back in the 1970's. Soon the word got out that those home-style meals were scrumptious, and the restaurant section of the Trailer Park began to expand to accommodate the ever increasing crowds of hungry hombres.

Eating at the Trailer Park is more of an experience than a meal. Dining is available in the large open air palapa, as well as under the stars on the adjacent patio. A large palapa bar keeps things hopping all night long, and fun music and live mariachis often fill the air. A gift show offers fun gifts for the poor slobs at home who couldn't come to Cabo!

The menu (located on the north wall on a huge chalk-board) is diverse, and the portions are generous and delicious! This is a great place for a romantic dinner for two, or for a group of 20 or more. Bring cash, and plenty of it...this place is way overpriced (but worth it at least once). And don't plan your visit for Wednesday, they're closed!

  • CHILENO BAY

If you like to snorkel, or don't snorkel but would like to give it a try in a safe and easy environment, Chileno Bay is calling you. This is Carlos Fiesta's favorite snorkel spot on the Cape!

Chileno Bay is located half way between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, not more than a 15 minute drive from either town. The parking lot is located about 200 yards south of the main entrance to the Hotel Cabo San Lucas on the ocean side of Baja Highway One.

What makes this the perfect snorkel destination? Lots of things! Easy access, calm waters, excellent visibility, varying depths and underwater terrain, lots of colorful fish plus a watersports rental shack just up from the waters edge. It just doesn't get any better than this!

Although this is a great place for beginning snorkelers, advanced snorkelers and Scuba divers love the large reef that starts at the shore and heads way out into deeper waters.

Looking for a secluded beach to take a nap after a hard day of chasing fish? Swim (or carefully walk) around the rocky reef at the water's edge, to the right of the water sports shack. There are several secluded beaches here that are perfect for catching some quality sun and relaxing!

  • SIDE TRIPS

Okay...you have planned this Cabo getaway for months, taken time off of work, and jumped through all of the hoops to garner a hotel and airfare. Are you going to lay by the pool all day? No way!

Although Cabo offers a host of things to do close to your hotel (see items above, just to name a few) there are plenty of other adventures awaiting you just a short drive from downtown Cabo.

If you have decided against renting a car for the entire length of your stay in Cabo, you might want to consider renting a car for 24 hours to enjoy a fun excursion sometime during your stay.

Cabo's side trips are a great way to get a feeling for the Cape area of the Baja Peninsula, and many of these side trips are well off the tourist track and avoid typical vacation crowds.

For a few ideas on where to go during your escape from Cabo check out the CABO SIDE TRIPS section of Cabo Expo. Now get out there and explore!
