Every great travel destination has it's own ground zero, the center of activity and the one place visitors must see during their stay. In New York it's Times Square, in London it's Picadilly Circus, in Moscow it's Red Square and New Orleans it's Bourbon Street. In Cabo San Lucas the main focal point (during the day) is Playa El Medano.
Playa El Medano is the main beach in Cabo San Lucas and a beehive of beach activity on any given day. This beach starts on the west end at the rocky entrance to the Cabo San Lucas Marina (in front of the Hacienda Beach Resort), and goes up the beach for over a mile. The majority of the action on this beach runs about a quarter of a mile from Billygan's Island Restaurant on the west side to Club Cascades Resort on the east side.
The ocean waters in front of Playa El Medano are usually warm and crystal clear. This section of beach is one of the most protected in the entire Cape region, so swimming is safe and fun. The entire ocean floor here is all sand.
Of all of the hotels located in the Cabo San Lucas area there are only a handful that are actually located on this special beach. From west to east they include the Hacienda Resort, the Melia San Lucas, the Plaza Bonita and the Plaza Bonita Rose. The Las Cascadas is also located on this main beach but it is a timeshare development and not a regular hotel.
So what's going on at Playa El Medano? You name it, it's happening here. Although laying in the sun on the beach here is very popular, there are plenty of other activities as well. Restaurants, bars, swimming in the ocean, Wave Runner rentals, kayaks, parasailing, banana rides, snorkel trips, and tours to El Arco and Lover's Beach are just a few of the hot tips on Medano Beach.
Yachts large and small line up at anchor in the waters in front of Playa El Medano, adding a nice offshore backdrop. Occassionally the cruise ships pull into Cabo San Lucas Bay and park out in front of El Medano, but far enough offshore to keep the ambiance mellow.
For people staying in the hotels on this beach access is easy. Just roll out of bed and walk down to the sand. Those who are staying in other areas of Los Cabos usually take a cab and get dropped off near the entrance of Billygan's Island or The Office restaurants. An oceanfront table in the sand and a cold beer are most appropriate here before strolling along the beach.
You didn't read it here, but one of the fun things to do at Playa El Medano is to check out the pool venues at the beachfront hotels. The swim up bar at the Melia San Lucas is one of Carlos Fiesta's favorite places on the planet. If you look like you know what you are doing you will probably have no problem getting past that guard at the bottom of the steps.
It can be fun to make a day of hanging out at Playa El Medano, even if you are not staying there. Start with oceanfront (toes in the sand) lunch and cold drinks at The Office, hang in the sun listening to music, take panga tour over to El Arco (bring a snorkel and camera) and then back to Medano Beach to rent Wave Runners and then lay in the sun again (don't forget sunscreen!). After you're done a quick dip in the nearest pool and then it's time to go back to your hotel to get ready for the best of Cabo..it's nightlife!
