CABO SAN LUCAS AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION
There are two airports that service Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas and Cabo San Lucas). Most of the international flight fly into the large International airport just north of San Jose del Cabo. Private aircraft and smaller charter flights often use the airport just north of Cabo, Cabo San Lucas airport. For more information on both airports drop by LOS CABOS AIRPORT INFORMATION Section.
As your flight is on final approach to Los Cabos International Airport (the big airport just north of San Jose del Cabo), you can't wait to get out of the plane, get to your hotel and experience all the fun of Cabo. There's only one thing between getting off your plane and checking in at your hotel....getting from the airport to the hotel.
Like most well-rounded tourist desinations in Mexico, Cabo offers plenty of options for visitors in all categories. Hotels on the cheap and the super deluxe, restaurants from basic fish taco stands to top end, and cocktails venues that range from 2 for 1 happy hour cervesas on Playa Medano to the $20 margaritas at the upscale lounge at the One and Only Pamilla. Cabo also offers several ways to get you from the airport to your hotel.
The choice you make as to how to get from the airport to your hotel will depend on two things, time and money (does this formula sound familiar?). The less time you want to spend getting from the airport to your hotel the more money you are probably going to have to spend. But don't get discouraged...just make a plan and go with it. After all, you're on vacation!
There are several different ways to get from Los Cabos International Airport to the Cabo San Lucas.
WALKING
It might sound crazy, but there is no better way to become 'one' with Cabo than to walk from the airport to the Toursit Zone. As a practical matter, it probably makes more sense to walk from the airport to Baja Highway One, which is less than 1/2 mile from the airport terminal. Once you reach the main highway local buses will take you towards San Jose del Cabo or to Cabo San Lucas for poco pesos.
SLOW BUS
Just before departing the airport terminal you will see a counter that says 'Ground Transportation'. One of the options here is to purchase a ticket on a bus to either San Jose del Cabo or to Cabo San Lucas. For under $20 you can get a ride on a first class bus and meet lots of new people along the way. There is a chance this bus will stop for a beer run just after departing the airport, so don't be surprised. With cervesa, bathroom and hotel stops along the way this bus can take as much as one and one half hours to finally get to Cabo. But it is usually a fun run. Carlos Fiesta has done it and loved every minute of it!
TAXIS
If you are traveling with just a few people a taxi cab can be a very good way to get from the airport to the hotel. For about $80 you can get four people into a taxi that is waiting right out in front of the airport terminal...just purchase a ticket, jump in and go! On a per-person basis that's about $20, not a bad deal in an exotic land where $20 doesn't usually get you much these days. If your service is good a tip is always apprecaited...10% is the norm.
SHUTTLE VAN
If your group is too large for a taxi the shuttle van might be the hot tip. These vans can hold from 8 to 10 people, and the cost is about $95. This works out good if your entire group is all going to the same hotel. If you are boxed in with a couple from Kansas City staying at a different hotel, expect a short detour on the way to your hotel. Just like taxi cabs, a 10% tip is appreciated if the service is good.
LIMO SERVICE
Surprisingly, limo service from the airport to the hotel zone is not really that expensive. For a little more than $100 (plus tip) you and seven of your best friends can travel the Los Cabos corredor in style, and not have to put up with stopping at various other hotels along the way. And if you want to make a beer run in transit, the driver will have no problem making a stop for you. It doesn't take long to get into the vacation mode when you arrive at your hotel by limo! For best results reserve the limo in advance.
RENTAL CAR
Los Cabos International Airport has plenty of rental car options waiting for you after you exit the customs and immigration section of the airport. Some Cabo travelers make reservations Stateside before arriving in Cabo, others love the negotiating that takes place at the car rental counter without having a reservation. During slow periods this walk-up technique can actually save you money. Drop by the Car Rental section of Cabo Expo for more information on renting a car in Cabo.
